A graphic design student from Sweden has created a flag for Earth as his final project; it has a blue background to represent the planet’s water and seven white interlocking rings to symbolize interconnectedness. A graphic designer in Sweden has created a global flag that could be displayed to represent a united Earth in the event humans do make it to other planets.Oskar Pernefeldt calls his graduation project at Beckmans College of Design “The International Flag of Planet Earth”.According to his website, the blue background reflects the water that covers most of the planet, and the seven blossom-like interlocking silver rings in the middle signify the interconnectedness of everything. In a broader sense, the blue could also symbolize the universe while the outer rings’ circular shape is reminiscent of Earth. He apparently designed the flag with two purposes in mind: to represent Earth during space expeditions and to symbolize unity on the planet. His website shows the design in numerous applications such as a patch on the sleeve of an astronaut’s space suit, a flag planted at an icy outpost, and a composite image being held up by a crowd at a sporting event.
